The South African State Theatre in Pretoria, South Africa, is proud to announce an exciting collaboration with multi-award-winning director Vusi Africa on the adaptation of the critically acclaimed film “Letters of Hope” into a musical stage play.
“Letters of Hope” set in 1976 apartheid South Africa, follows the story of 16-year-old Jeremiah who aspires to be a policeman but faces opposition from his father, a local postman. Following his father’s death, Jeremiah uncovers his father’s secret courier service, delivering letters from freedom fighters in exile and prison to their families. The young protagonist faces a difficult choice: will he continue his father’s mission and deliver hope to those in need?
The film garnered the prestigious award for “Artistic Bravery” at the Durban International Film Festival, and now, the story will be brought to life on stage through an enthralling musical adaptation. The talented cast includes Aphiwe Mkefe, Sibulele Gcililitshana, and Jet Novuka, who will bring depth and emotion to the characters and their struggles.

Director Vusi Africa, a powerful force in contemporary South African filmmaking, has a strong track record of success. His films, such as the award-winning “Letters of Hope” (2019) and the highly acclaimed “Surviving Gaza” (2021), have earned him numerous awards and nominations, including the DIFF award for Artistic Bravery, the inaugural honorary SAFTA for Best Emerging Filmmaker, and 14 nominations at the 18th Africa Academy Movie Awards. He was also named one of the most influential young South Africans by Mail and Guardian in 2022 and is currently AFDA‘s first Artist in Residency in the Masters program.
