If you’ve somehow managed to miss the first two weeks of Kwa Baba, the new Mzansi Magic telenovela that has taken over the coveted 19:30 timeslot, then where exactly have you been hiding?
Since its debut on 1 June, Kwa Baba has wasted no time pulling viewers into a world where love, family, tradition and power collide. Produced by Singa Vision Productions, the drama follows ambitious businessman Zwelakhe Mkhize as he attempts to honour his late father’s legacy, build an empire and win the heart of the woman he loves. Of course, nothing is ever that simple.
Twelve episodes in and Kwa Baba has already given viewers a whirlwind romance, messy lobola drama, simmering family feuds and enough ancestral intrigue to keep viewers on the edge of their seats. More importantly, it has managed to make us care about the people at the centre of it all. From love-at-first-sight romance and failed lobola negotiations to bitter family rivalries and ancestral secrets, the first 12 episodes have delivered enough drama to keep viewers talking every night. Here’s everything that has happened so far.
Zwelakhe and Bahumi’s fairytale romance began in the most unexpected way

One of the show’s biggest storylines has been the whirlwind romance between Zwelakhe Mkhize (played by Vuyo Biyela) and Bahumi Motaung (played by Rorisang Mohapi-Grootboom). Their story began when Bahumi’s birthday ended in heartbreak. While she expected to celebrate with her boyfriend, she instead discovered he had forgotten her special day and was busy partying with friends. Determined to confront him, Bahumi stormed off, only to nearly be knocked over by Zwelakhe. When she accidentally dropped her phone during the encounter, Zwelakhe followed her to return it and witnessed her disappointment firsthand.
What could have been a brief encounter quickly turned into something much bigger. After seeing how hurt she was, Zwelakhe offered her a lift home and surprised her with flowers. From that moment, he made it clear that he wasn’t interested in playing games. He pursued Bahumi wholeheartedly and before long was already talking about marriage. The chemistry between Vuyo Biyela and Rorisang Mohapi-Grootboom has made it easy for viewers to invest in their love story.
Dumisani declares war on the Mkhize family
While romance blossomed, trouble was brewing within the Mkhize family. The drama kicked off when the family gathered to honour their ancestors. Instead of unity, the ceremony exposed long-standing tensions, particularly from Dumisani Mkhize (played by Lindani Nkosi). Still carrying resentment over family leadership and legacy issues, Dumisani made it clear that he does not believe Zwelakhe deserves to lead the family.
What followed has been a calculated campaign to undermine his nephew at every opportunity. Lindani Nkosi has delivered one of the strongest performances on the show so far, portraying Dumisani as a man whose bitterness threatens to destroy everyone around him.
Lobola drama and family feuds

Just when it looked like Bahumi and Zwelakhe’s future was secured, Kwa Baba delivered one of its first major twists. After winning over Bahumi’s family, Zwelakhe promised to send his elders to formally begin lobola negotiations. The Motaungs eagerly prepared for the important day. Then disaster struck. Before Zwelakhe’s delegation could arrive, Bahumi’s ex-boyfriend attempted to beat him to it by sending his own representatives to negotiate lobola.
The shocking move ended in humiliation after Bahumi discovered what was happening and immediately rejected the proposal. However, things went from bad to worse when Zwelakhe’s family failed to arrive as planned. For Bahumi and her family, it looked like another man had broken her heart.
Viewers later learned that Zwelakhe’s absence was not because he had changed his mind. Instead, an unresolved issue from the past had come back to haunt the Mkhize family. Before Zwelakhe could move forward with his own lobola negotiations, his late father’s outstanding traditional obligations had to be settled first. His mother, MaMbokazi, was forced to return to her husband’s family so that long-overdue cultural matters could finally be addressed. Only then could Zwelakhe continue building his future with Bahumi. This storyline has been one of Kwa Baba‘s greatest strengths, showing how love and tradition often become deeply intertwined.
Hard times for lovers
Just when it seemed their relationship was beyond repair, fate intervened. After Bahumi suffered a health scare and collapsed, Zwelakhe rushed her to hospital. The incident forced both families to confront their frustrations and finally listen to what had really happened. When Zwelakhe finally got the chance to explain why he had missed the lobola negotiations, Bahumi began to understand the impossible position he had found himself in.
Meanwhile, the Mkhize family is not the only household facing conflict. The feud involving MaMbokazi and her relatives has repeatedly spilled into major family events, creating tension during lobola negotiations and exposing secrets that refuse to stay buried. On the other hand, Bahumi’s own family dynamics remain complicated. Her sister’s jealousy and lack of support have added another layer of emotional conflict, proving that not everyone is celebrating Bahumi’s happiness.
Bahumi saves Zwelakhe

One of the most intriguing moments came during an ancestral ceremony involving a mysterious calabash. Zwelakhe was expected to drink from it, but his attention shifted completely when Bahumi unexpectedly arrived. He put the calabash down and never completed the ritual.
Viewers immediately became suspicious when Dumisani prevented Mhlaba from drinking from it as well. Was something being hidden? Was Bahumi’s arrival a coincidence, or did she unknowingly protect Zwelakhe from something bigger? The show has not yet provided answers, but the moment has already become one of the most talked-about mysteries among viewers.
Kwa Baba has successfully established itself as more than just a love story. The telenovela balances romance, family politics, cultural traditions and generational conflict while introducing a cast of characters whose motivations are rarely straightforward. Vuyo Biyela and Rorisang Mohapi-Grootboom have quickly become one of television’s most compelling new couples, while Lindani Nkosi‘s portrayal of Dumisani continues to inject tension into nearly every storyline.
Watch Kwa Baba weekdays at 19:30 on Mzansi Magic (DStv Channel 161).
