November 6, 2026

Can two people who have been broken by the same betrayal ultimately heal one another? This is the question at the heart of Elke donker wolk, a brand-new drama mini-series that starts on Tuesday 17 November at 20:00 on kykNET (DStv channel 144). The series consists of three episodes and is produced by Homebrew Films.

Elke donker wolk tells the story of Johan Joubert, whose wife recently passed away, and André Visagie, who is also processing the loss of a loved one. When their paths unexpectedly cross at support group for grieving people, an unusual, sometimes
uncomfortable, but ultimately healing friendship develops that forces both men to face loss, betrayal, forgiveness and the complexities of love.

Their friendship seems coincidental but was planned. One of the two men has a secret agenda, while the other harbours a dark secret of his own. The other group members also carry heavy burdens. Jarrid (Clint Aplon) and Celeste (Veronique Jephtas) recently lost their young daughter. Over the years, Ritz (Amor Tredoux) lost her husband and three daughters. The pastor (Anton Treurnich), who founded the group after his parents’ death, has been helping people through the grieving process for 20 years, but he has never had a case like that of Johan and André.

The series explores universal themes such as grief, fatherhood, friendship and second chances. With a tongue-in-cheek approach, Elke donker wolk balances humour and heartache in a way that is honest, relatable and compassionate.

Although Elke donker wolk addresses loss and grief, it is ultimately a story about hope, friendship and resilience. It shows that even in the most difficult circumstances, there is still a silver lining to be found. – Director, Johannes Pieter Nel

With Elke donker wolk we wanted to tell a story that is rarely seen on Afrikaans television – one that explores male friendships, grief and the increasing normalisation of men in therapy. – Writer of Elke donker wolk, Marcel Spaumer

The cast is led by presenter and actor André Weideman (Beter as gister, Magda Louw) as Johan Joubert, and Evan Hengst (Wyfie, Suidooster) as André Visagie. Viewers will also remember Hengst as Simon in the recent mini-series Sy, die meeue en die Heilige Gees. Tanja Franzsen (Diepe waters, Die nuusmakers) plays the role of Jolani Joubert, with Janru Steenkamp (Niggies) as her son, Thomas. Ronel Geldenhuys (Wyfie, Projek Dina) can be seen as Janet. Elke donker wolk provides a fresh perspective on loss and shows how the most unlikely people can sometimes unexpectedly become the greatest source of comfort and understanding.

Elke donker wolk starts on Tuesday 17 November at 20:00 on kykNET (DStv channel 144). This mini-series will also be available on DStv Stream and Catch Up.
