BET Africa is turning up the drama this August with the premiere of Black Gold, a brand-new daily original that’s set to grip Mzansi from the very first episode. Launching 18 August 2025 on DStv Channel 129, this sizzling new telenovela—brought to life in partnership with the powerhouse Black Brain Pictures — dives deep into a world of betrayal, legacy, and redemption.
Set in the heart of KwaZulu-Natal, Black Gold follows the gripping journey of Amandla Zungu, portrayed by Nomalanga Shozi in her first-ever lead role. Amandla is a principled daughter of the soil who is cast out of her ancestral home after being falsely accused of her father’s murder.
“Black Gold is a celebration of African storytelling at its finest—rich in culture, layered in emotion, and driven by a stellar cast that brings these powerful characters to life. At BET Africa, we are committed to showcasing narratives that reflect the beauty, strength, and complexity of Black lives. This series is a tribute to Black resilience, Black love, and the unbreakable spirit of our communities,” said Monde Twala, Senior Vice President and GM of Paramount Africa and Lead for BET International.
The powerhouse cast also includes screen legend Dawn Thandeka King as Florence, while while Sello Maake KaNcube stars as Tom Motsepe, Florence’s secret lover and co-conspirator.
Mandla N, Executive Director at Black Brain Pictures, added: “Creating Black Gold was a game-changing experience—it shook us as much as it will shake the audience. Partnering with BET on this co-production is more than just making a show — it’s about reinvesting in our industry, breaking barriers, and taking a bold step forward for local storytelling and long-term growth. Black Gold is raw, emotional, and unapologetically authentic storytelling.”
The series stars Nomalanga Shozi, a familiar face to BET audiences, who now steps into the spotlight as Amandla — a woman forced into the dangerous world of illegal mining, where she must rise through the ranks to reclaim her legacy and confront the woman who stole everything from her.
Black Gold also champions empowering female narratives, featuring strong women who navigate and challenge the male-dominated worlds of mining and business. From Amandla’s rise as a revolutionary to Florence’s ruthless grip on power, the series highlights the resilience, complexity, and strength of women in the face of adversity—making it a timely and powerful reflection of modern African womanhood.
Black Gold is a saga of family, justice, and power—where every betrayal leaves a scar, and every choice has a cost. With its rich storytelling, cultural authenticity, and emotionally resonant themes, Black Gold is poised to become the next must-watch series on BET Africa. Tune in to BET (DStv Channel 129) from 18 August, Monday to Thursday at 18:30.
