Sinners has 16 Oscar nominations

Sinners earns a historic 16 Oscar nominations

Sinners, Ryan Coogler’s acclaimed supernatural thriller, has made the Academy Awards history by becoming the first film ever to receive 16 Oscar nominations.

The Warner Bros release stars Michael B. Jordan in a dual role as twin brothers who open a blues club in 1930s Mississippi, only to find themselves battling entrenched racism and a rising threat of vampires. Directed by Ryan Coogler, the film blends horror, historical drama and music culture, and has emerged as one of the most culturally significant releases of the decade.

Sinners in cinemas

Sinners has already grossed $368m worldwide, marking a major box office milestone and cementing Coogler’s unprecedented lifetime deal with the studio following the film’s success. At the 2026 Oscars, it is nominated for major prizes including best picture, best director (Coogler), leading actor (Jordan), supporting actor (Delroy Lindo), supporting actress (Wunmi Mosaku), and the Academy’s inaugural casting award.

The film also broke barriers across multiple craft categories. Costume designer Ruth E. Carter, now a five-time nominee, becomes the most-nominated Black woman in the Academy’s 97-year history, while cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw earns just the fourth-ever Oscar nomination for a woman in the category. With 16 nods, Sinners surpasses the long-standing record of 14 nominations previously shared by All About Eve (1950), Titanic (1997) and La La Land (2016).

Oscar nominations race: the closest challengers

One Battle After Another has 13 Oscar nominations

So far this awards season, ramshackle countercultural comedy One Battle After Another has dominated much of the conversation, and at the Oscars it trails Sinners closely with 13 nominations. The film’s ensemble cast performed strongly with the Academy, with Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn and Benicio del Toro all receiving acting nominations. Supporting actress Teyana Taylor is also tipped as the favourite in her category.

Meanwhile, Chloé Zhao’s Hamnet also performed strongly, earning eight nominations, including one for Jessie Buckley, now widely viewed as the frontrunner in the best actress race.

Oscar nominations win for Warner Bros

Thursday’s Oscar nominations represent a significant victory for Warner Bros, currently the subject of a potential takeover by Netflix. The studio’s slate this year included Sinners and One Battle After Another, alongside Superman and Weapons. Warner Bros leads all studios with 30 nominations, finishing well ahead of its closest competitors Netflix and Neon, which each secured 18 nods.

When are the Oscars 2026?

The Academy Awards ceremony takes place on 15 March, where Sinners will attempt to convert its historic Oscar nominations haul into wins.
