SABC earns 34 nominations at this year’s SAFTAs

The 19th edition of the South African Film and Television Awards is upon us, and SABC’s Video Entertainment division is celebrating an impressive 34 nominations this year. Leading the charge, SABC1 secured 23 nominations, showcasing its strong lineup of original programming. SABC2 follows with 7 nominations, while S3 rounds out the list with 4 nominations, highlighting the broadcaster’s diverse content offerings across its channels.

The current affairs show Cutting Edge, game show Deal or No Deal Celebrity, drama series Dichipi by JiK’iZinto, and popular soaps Uzalo, Amalanga Awafani, Generations – The Legacy, and Skeem Saam are among the standout nominations for SABC1.

Vusi Kunene and Aubrey Poo both nominated for Best Actor in a TV Soap

SABC 1 popular soapie Generations – The Legacy earned 7 nominations, including Best Actor in a TV Soap nods for Aubrey Poo and Vusi Kunene, with Jerome Du Plooy up for Best Supporting Actor in a TV Soap. Nominations for the soapie also include Best TV Soap and Most Popular TV Soap or Telenovela (Public Vote). Skeem Saam received 5 nominations including Sello Maake Ka-Ncube and Vele Manenje for Best Actor Supporting Actor in a TV Soap and Best Supporting Actress in a TV Soap, respectively. On SABC2, the documentary Language of My Soul, which follows African elder Katrina Esau as she revives a language she once felt ashamed of, is nominated in Best Documentary Feature, alongside Chasing The Sun (Best Made for TV Documentary) and educational programming such as 30 Winds of Change (Best Educational Programme) and Behind the Rainbow (Best Children’s Programme). Wild World Diaries is nominated for Best Natural History and Environmental Programme, and Chasing the Sun also received nominations for Best Achievement in Cinematography.

Meanwhile, S3 shines with reality and lifestyle content. Tropika Island of Treasure Zanzibar is nominated in Best Competition Reality Show, with host Zanele Potelwa recognised for Best TV Presenter (Public Vote). MasterChef Season 5 is nominated in Best International Format, and Dr Fezile Mkhize is also nominated for Best TV Presenter (Public Vote) for Top Travel.

This comprehensive slate highlights SABC Video Entertainment’s breadth, from high-calibre dramas and soap operas to documentaries, reality programming, and children’s content, cementing its presence at the 19th edition of the South African Film and Television Award.
