Govan Ontbloot returns for a second season
After a first season that challenged viewers to look beyond preconceived ideas and stereotypes, Govan Ontbloot returns to kykNET for a second season, premiering on Tuesday, 6 October at 21:00 on kykNET (DStv channel 144). The popular documentary series, hosted by award-winning journalist Govan Whittles, once again features 13 new episodes exploring the diverse people, communities, and lifestyles that make up South Africa.
As in the first season, Govan steers clear of sensationalism and prejudice. Through an honest, curious, and empathetic approach, viewers are given access to people and worlds that are often misunderstood or simply ignored. In the new season, Govan spends time with members of a naturist community, cannabis farmers who form part of a growing agricultural industry, victims of farm attacks, people who openly identify as witches and embrace the expanding world of spirits and deities. He visits a Free State family that has withdrawn from mainstream society and established its own church,
the influential Crusaders motorcycle club, Freemasons who practise their secret traditions, and residents of Onverwacht who proudly identify as Black Afrikaners.

According to Govan Whittles, the aim of the series remains to promote understanding rather than judgment.
“We delve even deeper into the lives of people who rarely step forward to be part of mainstream society. This time, it is about secrets and beliefs without shame. The new season presents a struggle with identity, and an encounter with various worlds behind the scenes.”
The series is produced by Combined Artistic Productions, the team behind productions such as Carte Blanche, Original Sin: My Son the Killer and Strangers You Know. Executive producer Rudi Botha says the new season builds on the approach that made the first season so successful.
“The second season of Govan Ontbloot is here and, as with season one, Govan’s curiosity is the driving force behind exploring the often unusual lifestyles and strong opinions of extraordinary people. Through his eyes, we journey into these worlds as he tries to discover
what they reveal about humanity.”
Co-executive producer John Webb believes the series is particularly relevant in a time when people are quick to judge without truly seeking to understand.
“In a world where opinion is valued above observation, and self-righteousness above understanding, Ontbloot seeks to explore questions of identity, belonging, and community. As part of that journey, Govan reveals his own prejudices, uncertainties, and preconceived ideas. We hope audiences enjoy that journey as much as we have.”
With its distinctive blend of investigative journalism, authentic conversations, and visually compelling storytelling, the second season of Govan Ontbloot promises to spark conversation once again and offer fresh perspectives on both familiar and unfamiliar South African experiences.
Season 2 of Govan Ontbloot premieres on Tuesday 6 October at 21:00 on kykNET (DStv channel 144). Episodes will also be available on DStv Stream and Catch Up.
