Moshe Ndiki to host ‘Mgidi Moms’ on Mzansi Magic

Mzansi Magic has announced its compelling new original reality series Mgidi Moms, a first-of-its-kind show that explores the coming-of-age journey of Xhosa boys as they transition into manhood through initiation, seen through the eyes of the mothers who support them every step of the way.

Deeply rooted in one of the most sacred rites of passage in Xhosa culture, Mgidi Moms offers a fresh perspective on a tradition that has long been guided by men. Initiation remains a respected and significant cultural practice, and the role of mothers in preparing for, honouring and celebrating this milestone continues to grow. Their involvement reflects love, pride and a deep respect for heritage.

Hosted by The Queen actor and 2020 DStv Viewers’ Choice Award winner for Best TV Presenter, Moshe Ndiki, each episode introduces a new zibazana, the mother of the initiate who is preparing for the life-changing moment. Viewers will follow their journey from the early stages of planning through to the emotional send-off, gaining insight into the care, strength and resilience that define motherhood during this pivotal time.

The series showcases a diverse range of mothers. Some go all out to mark the occasion with elaborate celebrations, while others choose a more traditional and understated approach. Despite their different styles, they are united by a shared commitment to family, culture and their sons’ futures. Told from both the mothers’ and sons’ perspectives, Mgidi Moms is a heartfelt celebration of identity, tradition and community.

We recently caught up with Moshe, who gave us the tea on hosting the show, being back on Mzansi Magic, what viewers can expect and more.

How does it feel to be back on Mzansi Magic?

Being back on Mzansi Magic feels like returning home. It is where all my dreams started and continue to live out – it feels so familiar. I’ll always be a huge fan of how the channel keeps on growing in terms of their shows.

Why did you say yes to doing Mgidi Moms?

I said yes to hosting Mgidi Moms because I thought one, it is a fantastic concept and two, it is about time that we see content told by us, for us.

Did this process remind you of your personal journey?

Being a part of this show definitely reminded me of my own personal journey when I went through this rite of passage in 2009. It’s so beautiful witnessing it through the eyes of what feels like my own mother: what she went through, the stresses of putting everything together, the hope for everything to fall into place. It’s special just being a part of all of these celebrations and what they mean to the families.

How was your experience with the various moms, their sons and their families?

My experience with the moms, their sons and their families has been absolutely phenomenal. It really shows how welcoming we South Africans are and how open-minded we can be. With every family I visited, I felt embraced and treated like one of their own. So many memories were created and so many genuine bonds were formed along the way.

Why is it important to have shows that showcase our traditions?

We are celebrating not just the traditions, but also the work and care that go into putting together such a big milestone event and the pressure that goes along with that. And of course, we’re honouring the mothers who make it all happen.

Is there anything you learned about yourself while filming the show?

I learned a lot about myself while filming the show. One of the things is that I adapt very easily. I also learned that I’m a crybaby! And I will always value strong family traditions.

What is your take on women being at the forefront of these celebrations?

It’s about time we show the strength of women, as well as the work and character it takes to coordinate, deal with people and bring families together. They honestly just adore their sons and will stop at nothing to achieve the perfect mgidi.
