The Polygamist – Jonasi Gomora (2026)

Sdumo Mtshali leads the Netflix series The Polygamist as Jonasi Gomora

If there is one role currently dominating conversations across South Africa, it is Jonasi in Netflix‘s The Polygamist. Based on Sue Nyathi‘s acclaimed novel, the 22-episode supernovela follows a successful businessman whose secret relationships slowly unravel the life he has worked so hard to build. At the centre of it all is Jonasi, a charismatic yet deeply flawed man whose decisions leave devastation in their wake.

Mtshali’s performance has earned praise from viewers for its complexity. He manages to make Jonasi charming, frustrating, vulnerable and infuriating all at once. It is a performance that reminds audiences why he remains one of the country’s most compelling actors. With fans already demanding a second season, Jonasi may well become one of the defining roles of Mtshali’s career. Produced by Stained Glass Production, the show features an ensemble cast including Gugu Gumede, Kwanele Mthethwa, Celeste Ntuli, Kenneth Nkosi, Luyanda Zwane, Wonder Ndlovu, Nolwazi Tsebesha and Noluthando Shabalala.

Marked – Tebza Nyembezi (2025)

Marked on Netflix

Netflix‘s Marked showcased a different side of Mtshali’s acting abilities. The raw and emotionally charged crime drama follows Babalwa, a cash-in-transit security guard whose life begins to spiral when desperation forces her into dangerous territory. As medical bills mount and options disappear, she becomes entangled in a risky scheme that threatens everything she holds dear.

Mtshali plays Tebza, a dependable colleague who becomes part of the increasingly complicated situation surrounding Babalwa. Surrounded by a stellar cast including Lerato Mvelase, Bonko Khoza, Ama Qamata, and Jerry Mofokeng wa Makhetha, Mtshali once again proves his ability to hold his own among some of the industry’s finest performers.

How To Ruin Love: The Proposal (2024)

Audiences familiar with Netflix‘s popular How To Ruin franchise were treated to another chaotic family adventure in How To Ruin Love: The Proposal.

The series follows Zoleka as she desperately tries to repair her relationship with Kagiso after sabotaging it just days before Valentine’s Day. What follows is a hilarious and heartfelt journey involving meddling relatives, family drama and plenty of unexpected twists. The ensemble cast includes Bohang Moeko, Tina Jaxa, Dumisani Mbebe, Noxolo Dlamini, Thando Thabethe, Sandile Mahlangu and Sdumo Mtshali. The role allowed Mtshali to step into a lighter, more comedic environment while still bringing his trademark charisma to the screen.

My Brother’s Keeper (2023)

iNumber Number: Jozi Gold – Chili (2023)

Sdumo Mtshali as Chili in Inumber Number: Jozi Gold

Few characters are as closely associated with Sdumo Mtshali as Chili. In iNumber Number: Jozi Gold, Netflix reunited audiences with South Africa’s most famous cop duo, Chili and Shoes, played by Mtshali and the late Presley Chweneyagae. The action-packed film takes viewers through glamorous casinos, private jets, dangerous criminal underworlds and adrenaline-fuelled chases across Johannesburg.

This reboot saw Netflix collaborate with original creator, writer and director Donovan Marsh alongside the returning lead actors to revive one of South Africa’s most recognisable action franchises. Mtshali effortlessly slips back into the role of Chili, proving that some characters never lose their appeal. The film also serves as a celebration of the chemistry between Mtshali and Chweneyagae, whose partnership remains one of South African cinema’s most beloved pairings.

Blood Psalms – Commander Lekoya (2022)

Blood Psalms is a Mzansi series on Showmax and DStv Stream

One of the most ambitious productions ever created on the continent, Blood Psalms transported viewers into an epic fantasy world inspired by ancient Africa. Created by the team behind Knuckle City, the action-packed series follows Princess Zazi as she navigates ancient prophecies, deadly rivalries and supernatural forces threatening her world. Mtshali joined a remarkable cast featuring Bokang Phelane, Warren Masemola, Hamilton Dlamini, Bongile Mantsai, Hlubi Mboya, Siv Ngesi and Thishiwe Ziqubu. The series demonstrated yet again that Mtshali is never afraid to challenge himself with projects outside the conventional television landscape.

The Estate – Muzi Phakathwayo (2021)

Few soap opera exits generated as much discussion as Muzi Phakathwayo’s apparent death in The Estate. Set within the affluent Echelon Estate, the series explored class divisions, political tensions, family secrets and land disputes simmering beneath the surface of suburban perfection.

Mtshali’s character quickly became a fan favourite, and viewers were left stunned when Muzi seemingly exited the story. In a twist that delighted audiences, both the character and actor later returned to the show. It’s proof that in television, no character is ever truly gone, something The Polygamist fans may want to remember when discussing Jonasi’s future.

Tempy Pushas – (2015)

Before many of his more recent headline-making roles, Mtshali starred in Tempy Pushas, a drama series that explored the realities behind the glamorous fashion industry.

Rather than focusing solely on celebrity and luxury, the show examined the sacrifices, struggles and personal battles that often exist behind the scenes. Alongside Pallance Dladla, the late Akhumzi Jezile and Tumie Ngumla, Mtshali helped bring authenticity to a series that resonated with young South Africans chasing ambitious dreams.

Honourable mentions

S’dumo Mtshali’s career extends far beyond the titles listed above. Fans should also seek out his memorable work in Isibaya, Intersexions, Saints and Sinners and Is’thunzi, all of which helped cement his reputation as one of South Africa’s finest actors.

As The Polygamist continues to dominate conversations and The Four Of Us prepares to debut, Mtshali’s body of work stands as a reminder of just how versatile and accomplished he has become. Few actors can move so comfortably between action, drama, fantasy, romance and telenovelas while remaining equally convincing in every role.
