How to Ruin Diwali: Meet the Parents
Synopsis
How To Ruin Diwali: Meet the Parents brings family secrets, culture clashes and two very opinionated households together for a Diwali weekend that quickly spirals out of control. When perfectionist Mmabatho Nkomo meets her fiancé’s traditional Indian family for the first time, her desperate attempt to impress them backfires spectacularly after she accidentally exposes her future father-in-law’s secret affair. Premieres 30 October 2026 on Netflix.
With Diwali just days away, Mmabatho must navigate unfamiliar cultural territory and somehow reunite the family she has torn apart — without causing even more chaos.
The newest instalment in Netflix’s fan-favourite How To Ruin franchise, following How To Ruin Christmas and How To Ruin Love, How To Ruin Diwali: Meet the Parents follows Mmabatho as she prepares to take the next step in her relationship with her down-to-earth fiancé, Varshen. There’s just one problem: their families have never met. When Varshen introduces Mmabatho to his parents, Tarina (Jailoshini Naidoo) and Sharm (Koobeshan Naidoo), over Diwali weekend, what should be an important family introduction quickly becomes anything but. The surprise arrival of Mmabatho’s estranged parents, Penelope (Sonia Mbele) and Mandla (Meshack Mavuso), turns an already uncomfortable dinner into a full-blown clash of personalities, expectations and cultures.
Then comes one badly timed revelation. Mmabatho accidentally exposes her future father-in-law’s secret affair, threatening to derail the family's Diwali celebrations and leaving her with an even bigger mess to fix. Determined to put everything right, Mmabatho takes matters into her own hands. But as anyone familiar with the How To Ruin franchise will know, good intentions can have spectacularly bad consequences. With family tensions mounting and Diwali just around the corner, Mmabatho must find a way to bring everyone back together before her attempt to impress her future in-laws completely destroys the relationship she is trying to build.
