Sex/Life, a romantic series on Netflix

The best romantic series on Netflix right now

Looking for romantic series to stream on Netflix? From emotional love stories and complicated relationships to feel-good romances and addictive dramas, these are some of the Netflix series worth adding to your watchlist, including South African series.

Netflix has no shortage of shows that turn up the heat. From steamy South African dramas and forbidden affairs to complicated romances, dangerous obsessions and reality dating shows where everyone is trying very hard not to give in to temptation, the streamer has built quite the collection for viewers looking for something a little more… grown.

So, if you’re looking for Netflix shows to watch with the lights off, these are the titles to put on your watchlist.

Beauty in Black

Beauty in Black on Netflix

Beauty in Black brings glamour, ambition, family secrets, power and complicated relationships together in one very bingeable South African Netflix drama. The Tyler Perry-produced series follows Kimmie, played by Taylor Polidore Williams, whose difficult circumstances lead her into the orbit of the wealthy and powerful Bellarie family. Crystle Stewart, Debbi Morgan and the ensemble cast bring the family’s rivalries, secrets and power struggles to life.

What makes Beauty in Black particularly addictive is the collision between Kimmie’s world and the Bellaries’ glamorous but deeply dysfunctional one. It’s glossy, dramatic and filled with enough betrayal to make “just one more episode” a dangerous promise. And there’s another reason this belongs near the top: Netflix has renewed Beauty in Black for a fourth season, keeping Kimmie’s story going beyond its already substantial run. If you’re looking for a Netflix series with glamour, scandal and complicated relationships, start here.

Fatal Seduction

Fatal Seduction on Netflix

Netflix wasn’t exactly subtle with the title. Fatal Seduction is one of South Africa’s most obvious entries into the steamy-thriller conversation, following Nandi Mahlati, whose seemingly settled life is thrown into chaos after a weekend away leads to an affair. And things only get messier from there.

The series has now gone through three seasons, with Kgomotso Christopher taking centre stage as Nandi in the latest chapter. Season 3 picks up years after the earlier chaos, bringing Nandi back into a world involving Jacob Tau, Leonard and Vuyo, while her daughter Zinhle becomes entangled in the fallout. The Decider described the third season as continuing the show’s trademark combination of erotic drama and twists. That’s what makes Fatal Seduction so bingeable: the attraction is only the beginning of the problem. Set against a South African backdrop and packed with secrets, betrayal and danger, this is one for viewers who like their romance with a very healthy dose of “someone is definitely hiding something.”

Bridgerton

Bridgeton on Netflix

You can’t make a list of romantic Netflix series without Bridgerton. The Regency-era phenomenon has turned longing, forbidden attraction, scandal and complicated courtships into appointment television. Season 1 gave us Daphne Bridgerton, played by Phoebe Dynevor, and Simon Basset, played by Regé-Jean Page. Season 2 brought the electric tension between Anthony Bridgerton, played by Jonathan Bailey, and Kate Sharma, played by Simone Ashley. Season 3 shifted the focus to Colin Bridgerton, played by Luke Newton, and Penelope Featherington, played by Nicola Coughlan.

And now the franchise has moved on to Benedict Bridgerton, played by Luke Thompson, and Sophie Baek, played by Yerin Ha, in Season 4. Netflix has already renewed the show through Seasons 5 and 6, with Season 5 set to focus on Francesca Bridgerton and Michaela Stirling. That’s a lot of romance to keep track of. But perhaps the show’s biggest trick is making yearning feel like an actual event. Bridgerton has become synonymous with lavish costumes, ballroom drama, forbidden attraction and very grown-up chemistry, making it one of Netflix’s defining romantic franchises.

Mea Culpa

And then there’s Mea Culpa. Starring Kelly Rowland as criminal defence attorney Mea Harper and Trevante Rhodes as artist Zyair Malloy, the Tyler Perry film combines courtroom drama, mystery, attraction and betrayal. Mea takes on Zyair’s high-profile murder case, but professional boundaries become increasingly difficult to maintain. Kelly and Trevante connection is another reason this one stands out. Seeing the former Destiny’s Child star lead a Netflix thriller opposite Rhodes gives Mea Culpa an interesting place in Netflix‘s adult-drama catalogue. If you like your romance wrapped inside a murder mystery, add this one to the list.

Obsession

Obsession, a romantic series on Netflix

The British limited series stars Richard Armitage as William Farrow, a respected surgeon whose attraction to his son’s fiancée, Anna Barton, played by Charlie Murphy, develops into an increasingly dangerous obsession. Indira Varma plays William’s wife, Ingrid. Netflix describes Obsession as an erotic thriller, and the four-part series wastes little time establishing that this isn’t going to be a conventional love story. It’s dark, uncomfortable and deliberately provocative — a story about attraction, secrecy, betrayal and the consequences of wanting something you probably shouldn’t. If you’re after a short, steamy Netflix thriller, this one can disappear from your evening very quickly.

Sex/Life

Sex/Life, a romantic series on Netflix

If Sex/Life isn’t already somewhere on your Netflix watchlist, what exactly are you waiting for? The series stars Sarah Shahi as Billie, a wife and mother whose seemingly settled suburban life is shaken when memories of her former lover Brad, played by Adam Demos, come rushing back. Her husband Cooper, played by Mike Vogel, soon finds himself caught in the middle of a relationship where the past refuses to stay in the past.

At the centre of the series is a question that makes it so addictive: what happens when the life you’ve built doesn’t completely erase the life you once wanted? Sex/Life became one of Netflix‘s signature adult relationship dramas, putting marriage, temptation, fantasy and complicated choices front and centre. This is very much one of those Netflix shows you’ll want to watch with the lights off.

Too Hot to Handle

Too Hot to Handle on Netflix

What happens when you put a group of attractive singles together in paradise and tell them they can’t hook up? Too Hot to Handle has spent multiple seasons finding out. The Netflix reality hit turns attraction and temptation into the actual premise, with contestants attempting to form meaningful connections while following Lana’s rules and trying not to lose the prize money. Of course, rules become considerably harder to follow when you’re sharing a luxury villa with people you fancy. There’s flirting, jealousy, romance, temptation and plenty of questionable decisions. It’s lighter than Obsession or Fatal Seduction, but if you’re searching for steamy reality TV on Netflix, it deserves a place here.

Dark Desire

Dark Desire, a romantic series on Netflix

If you prefer your romance with a darker edge, Dark Desire deserves a spot here. The Mexican thriller stars Maite Perroni as Alma, a married lawyer whose weekend away becomes the beginning of a dangerous relationship with Darío, played by Alejandro Speitzer. But the attraction is only the beginning. Secrets, suspicion, manipulation and murder soon enter the picture, transforming what might have been a simple affair into a much darker mystery. Dark Desire is exactly the kind of international Netflix thriller that keeps asking viewers to question what is real, who can be trusted and how far obsession can go.

You

You on Netflix

Not all romance is healthy. In fact, You takes the idea of the perfect romantic lead and turns it into something considerably darker.

Penn Badgley stars as Joe Goldberg, a seemingly charming bookseller whose idea of love quickly becomes obsession. Then there was Love Quinn, played by Victoria Pedretti, whose arrival took the series into another twisted chapter. Joe’s narration is part of what makes You so compelling. He can convince himself that everything he’s doing is romantic while viewers are watching the horror unfold in front of them. It’s not exactly a relationship goal. But it is one hell of a binge.

Hollywood

Hollywood, a romantic series on Netflix

Welcome to Hollywood, where ambition, relationships and secrets are all part of the business. Ryan Murphy‘s Hollywood takes viewers back to post-World War II Los Angeles and imagines what could have happened if a group of aspiring actors and filmmakers had challenged the industry’s deeply entrenched power structures. The ensemble includes David Corenswet, Darren Criss, Jeremy Pope and Patti LuPone, giving the limited series a strong cast to match its glossy period setting. There are romances, ambition, power struggles and complicated relationships, but underneath all of it is a bigger question about who gets to succeed and who gets to be seen.

The Hunting Wives

The Hunting Wives, a romantic series on Netflix

Friendship, wealth, secrets and temptation collide in The Hunting Wives. The Netflix drama follows Sophie, a woman who becomes drawn into the glamorous world of a wealthy Texas socialite, where friendship quickly develops into something far more complicated. But underneath the polished houses and perfect appearances are secrets, scandal and murder. The show has been compared to other dramas about wealthy women whose seemingly perfect suburban lives conceal much darker secrets. If your ideal Netflix binge involves beautiful people making questionable decisions, this one fits comfortably into the lineup.

And there are plenty more Netflix titles worth adding to the after-dark watchlist. Fall for Me mixes romance, attraction and mystery, while Japanese film Ride or Die takes love into much darker territory with a story of obsession, trauma and escape. Young Royals offers something more tender, following Prince Wilhelm and Simon as their relationship collides with royal expectations, while Sexify brings a lighter, funnier take on intimacy, friendship and modern dating.

For something more dramatic, Tiny Pretty Things combines ballet, rivalry, romance and secrets, while Lucifer earns a mention for the undeniable chemistry between Tom Ellis‘ Lucifer Morningstar and Lauren German‘s Chloe Decker. Then there’s 365 Days, the controversial erotic romance that became a Netflix phenomenon and expanded into a trilogy, alongside period romances such as The Empress and Outlander. Modern relationship chaos comes courtesy of Valeria and the anthology Easy, while Toy Boy and Fake Profile add crime, secrets and danger to the mix. And for something darker and more psychological, Vladimir puts desire, power and obsession under the microscope, with Rachel Weisz and Leo Woodall at the centre of its increasingly complicated story.

Now all that’s left is to pick your poison and press play.
