As his star continues to rise, we sat down with the actor to discuss stepping into the world of The Polygamist, and his experience working on some of Netflix‘s most streamed titles.

First of all congratulations on this role, I believe this is your third Netflix Original. How does it feel?

Yes, it’s number three. Yoh! I mean, it’s a lot, but most importantly, I’m grateful to be here. My prayers have been answered. God has been so good to me, and I’m truly grateful. What I also love is that all of these characters are different, and each story is unique. The styles of storytelling vary as well, which has made the experience even more rewarding. So, yeah, I’m really happy.

The dynamic that Menzi has with Lindani and also Jonasi is very interesting and gets really complicated as the show progresses. What conversations do you hope your story will highlight around rejection, masculinity and vulnerability?

Menzi is very soft, and his father sees that as a weakness. The way he has been raised actually pushes him away from who he truly is, because all he really wants is love, the love of a child. But he is also very respectful about it. Some people might interpret that as fear, but for him, he overthinks. He is constantly in his mind, especially when it comes to Lindani. He’s asking himself, ‘Should I say it? Should I tell her I love her? Is she going to think I’m a pervert?’ Because they’ve grown up together, she’s his sister’s friend and sometimes she dresses up in front of him. So if he tells her how he feels, will she think he has been looking at her in that way all along?’

His father ultimately pushes him to a point where he becomes someone completely different, someone shaped by what is considered ‘a man’ in his father’s eyes. It almost feels like the idea being imposed on him is that being a man means taking what you want by force. But that is not who Menzi is.
