Umthetho is streaming on Netflix
Umthetho is now streaming on Netflix, bringing the highly anticipated South African crime drama to viewers from today, 14 August 2026. The seven-episode drama follows Mbali (played by the talented Nqobile Nunu Khumalo), a brilliant young public prosecutor whose carefully built life is thrown into chaos when she discovers that her brother Moses (portrayed by veteran actor Tony Kgoroge), whom she believed had died years earlier, is alive and running a ruthless prison syndicate. With her younger brother Sphelele (played by Given Stuurman) caught in the middle, Mbali is forced into an impossible position where her responsibility to the law clashes with her loyalty to her family.
Produced by Black Brain Pictures, Umthetho is a South African adaptation of the Brazilian crime drama Brotherhood (known as Irmandade), bringing the original story into a distinctly local setting. After months of anticipation, Umthetho is now available to watch on Netflix. For viewers interested in crime dramas, complicated family stories and morally conflicted characters, the seven-episode series offers a distinctly local take on the prison-syndicate thriller.
Here’s everything you need to know about Umthetho on Netflix, including the story, cast, episode count and how to watch the series.
The story: What is Umthetho about?

At the centre of Umthetho is Mbali Dlamini, played by Nqobile Nunu Khumalo. Mbali is a skilled public prosecutor who has built her life around the law. But everything changes when she discovers that her older brother Moses, played by Tony Kgoroge, is still alive. Mbali had spent 14 years believing that Moses was dead. Instead, she discovers that he has survived prison and has become the hardened leader of a powerful criminal syndicate known as iGazlam’.
When violence begins spreading through the city, the evidence increasingly points towards Moses and the criminal organisation operating from behind prison walls. Mbali is subsequently pulled into a world that directly contradicts everything she has built her career around. But this is not simply a story about a prosecutor pursuing a criminal. When the safety of her younger brother Sphelele (Given Stuurman) is threatened, Mbali is forced to work with Moses, placing her directly between her professional commitment to justice and her loyalty to the family she has spent years trying to protect. The result is a story about family, betrayal, survival, corruption and the difficult choices people make when there is no clean way out. Netflix similarly describes the central premise as an idealistic state prosecutor being forced to become a double agent inside her imprisoned older brother’s gang.

Nqobile Nunu Khumalo plays Mbali
Nqobile Nunu Khumalo takes on the central role of Mbali, a young public prosecutor whose commitment to the law is tested when her family becomes entangled with the criminal world. Her character’s greatest conflict is not simply catching criminals. She must confront the fact that one of the most dangerous criminals in her orbit is the brother she believed she had lost.
Tony Kgoroge plays Moses
Tony Kgoroge plays Moses, Mbali’s older brother and the leader of the prison syndicate. After spending years in prison, Moses has emerged as a very different man from the brother Mbali remembers. His return forces Mbali to confront a painful question: can the brother she once knew still be found beneath the hardened criminal he has become?
Given Stuurman plays Sphelele
Given Stuurman plays Sphelele, the youngest of the siblings. His safety becomes one of the reasons Mbali is forced to cross the line between her professional responsibilities and her family’s dangerous world.
Who else stars in Umthetho?
The ensemble also features Lorcia Cooper-Khumalo, SK Khoza, Sindi Dlathu, Molefi Monaisa, Ernest Msibi, Lungelo Madondo, Obed Baloyi, Mandla Gaduka and Herald Khumalo.

Can you download Umthetho on Netflix?

Yes. Netflix allows subscribers to download supported movies and series through the Netflix app for offline viewing. This means viewers can legally download available Umthetho episodes to a compatible device through Netflix rather than using unofficial download sites. The availability of downloads can depend on the title and device, so the easiest option is to open the Umthetho title in the Netflix app and look for the download option next to the available episodes.
Who produced Umthetho?
Umthetho is produced by Black Brain Pictures, the production company behind South African titles including Lockdown, DiepCity and The Black Door. The series is directed by Mandla N, Johnny Barbuzano and Jonathan “Jono” Hall, with Mandla N and Melissa Nayimuli serving as creative directors.
What can viewers expect from Umthetho?
Umthetho combines crime thriller elements with a family drama built around the complicated relationship between Mbali and Moses. At its heart is the conflict between law and family. Mbali has spent her career fighting for justice, while Moses has built his power within the very criminal system she is expected to confront. That creates a particularly dangerous situation: every decision Mbali makes professionally could put her family at risk, while every decision she makes for her family could compromise the principles she has spent years defending.
