Award-winning film ‘Al wat ek weet’ in cinemas near you
The brand-new Afrikaans feature film Al wat ek weet, winner of the Festival Favourite Award at this year’s kykNET Silwerskerm Festival, shines on the big screen in selected cinemas nationwide from 30 October. The film also won the Award of the Youth Jury at the SCHLiNGEL International Film Festival in Chemnitz, Germany, this past weekend, and received an Honourable Mention as well.
Al wat ek weet is based on the beloved youth novel of the same name by Marita van der Vyver and tells a moving coming-of-age story about loss, family, identity, first love and the power of words. In addition to the Festival Favourite Award, Al wat ek weet also won the Silwerskerm Awards for Best Sound Design (Guy Steer) and Best Production Design (Rocco Pool).

When a car accident kills his mother and his father retreats into a clinic, seventeen-year-old Gabriel Lombard (Jonan Mouton) is uprooted from the leafy mountain suburbs and is sent to live in a cramped Woodstock house with his aunt Lotta (Zenobia Kloppers) and grandmother Lenie (June van Merch). Determined not to crumble like his father, he buries his grief behind a cool front, wild lies and an overripe imagination, where a Kaapse Klopse brass band chases him through the streets.
In therapy, he meets Sasha and falls for her. To get closer to her, he is strong-armed into the school poetry slam. But the nearer the competition comes, the harder his buried grief pushes to the surface, until the boy who runs from everything must finally turn and face it.

Who directed Al wat ek weet?

Directed by Devon Delmar and Jason Jacobs, Al wat ek weet offers a fresh, touching look at young people’s challenges, family relationships, and the search for hope in the midst of difficult circumstances.
“What gripped us from the start was Gabriel’s journey from grief to hope. It is a story about loss and second chances, but also about the people who help us make sense of life again when everything falls apart. We hope audiences will recognise themselves in these characters in one way or another and leave the cinema with a sense of hope,” say the directors, Devon Delmar and Jason Jacobs.
The duo has already gained international recognition with their debut feature film, Carissa, which was screened in the Orizzonti competition at the Venice International Film Festival. Their follow-up feature film, Variasies op ’n tema (Variations on a Theme), won the prestigious Tiger Award at the Rotterdam International Film Festival this year and was recently selected as South Africa’s official entry for the 99th Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category. Al wat ek weet was produced by Annemarie du Plessis of Meria Productions and is distributed locally by Filmfinity.
