Together, Duke, Soli, Mzi and Thabo belong to Khula, a jazz-themed stokvel founded on friendship, loyalty and supporting one another through life’s challenges. But behind the laughter and brotherhood, each man is carrying burdens of his own. Soli struggles to satisfy his demanding wife, Mzi secretly battles problems within his marriage while trying to pay his son’s university fees, and Thabo finds himself unemployed, broke and estranged from his family. As the plan unfolds, the men quickly discover that some decisions come at a far greater cost than money.

From bestseller to television: Critical But Stable
Critical But Stable is adapted from Angela Makholwa‘s bestselling novel of the same name, continuing a growing trend of South African books making the successful transition to television. Makholwa previously brought Red Ink to screens, while other acclaimed adaptations such as The Wife from Dudu Busani and The Polygamist from Sue Nyathi have shown the strong appetite for stories that begin on the page before finding new audiences on screen. Makholwa also serves as co-executive producer on the series, helping ensure the spirit of the novel is preserved in its television adaptation.
