eGagasini: Waves of Change cast on etv

Meshack Mavuso on decades of excellence and his new chapter in eGagasini

For more than three decades, Meshack Mavuso has firmly cemented himself as Mzansi’s legendary actor. The celebrated icon adds another compelling chapter to his remarkable legacy as he joins e.tv‘s highly anticipated new daily drama, eGagasini: Waves of Change, which premiered this Monday, 29 June at 19:30.

Mavuso takes on the role of Senzo, the legendary founder of Umlilo Records and once one of Durban’s most influential music producers. Having helped define the city’s music landscape, Senzo is determined to rebuild his struggling empire and reclaim the legacy he spent a lifetime creating.

For the veteran actor, stepping into Senzo’s world offered a refreshing departure from many of the powerful authority figures he has portrayed throughout his career.

“It’s an amazing role. I’ve been wearing suits for a very long time, but this time I get to play a cool, laid-back guy in tracksuits,” he says. “He’s a legendary music producer from Durban, a former Kwaito star who’s now focused on discovering and nurturing the next generation of talent.”

The SAFTA winner has built a career defined by unforgettable performances, consistency and an unwavering commitment to authentic storytelling. Whether he was captivating audiences as the feared yet layered Javas in the groundbreaking Yizo Yizo, the respected Vusi Moletsane in Isidingo, or delivering standout performances in Rhythm City, Isithembiso, The River, Durban Gen, Smokes and Mirrors and Netflix‘s The Polygamist, Mavuso has remained one of the country’s most revered and enduring talents. Set against the backdrop of Durban’s vibrant music scene, eGagasini: Waves of Change also celebrates the province’s rich cultural identity, something Mavuso says stood out during production.

“Music culture is different. Durban and Johannesburg each have their own unique rhythm and identity,” he explains. “What I loved most was seeing how people in KwaZulu-Natal truly embrace their own. Whether it’s Maskandi or Gqom, the support is incredible, and it was beautiful to bring that authenticity to the screen.”

As South African audiences prepare to meet yet another memorable character from one of the country’s greatest performers, Magabane believes viewers are in for something special.

“It’s young, it’s fresh, it’s vibrant and it’s packed with exciting young talent.” – Meshack

Reflecting on a career spanning more than three decades, the veteran actor also has a simple but powerful message for the next generation hoping to follow in his footsteps.

“They must love the art in them, not themselves in the art. Love the craft for art’s sake, not for money or fame.”

The cast of eGagasini: Waves of Change is led by Meshack Mavuso and Gugu Gumede, with a fresh talent that includes Nolwazi Tsebesha, Aphelele Shezi, Nomfundo Radebe and Londeka Mkhwanazi. Some of the recognised talent on the show includes the likes of Ntando Mncube, Duduzile Ngcobo, Mduduzi Nombela and Anele Nene.
