Bobbi and Ndumi in The Four Of Us

The Four of Us: Why Mzansi can’t get enough of Bobbi and Ndumi’s love story

Just three weeks after its premiere, The Four of Us has captivated millions of viewers on etv. Yes, more than three million viewers tuned in for last Thursday’s episode, making it the biggest episode since the show debuted. But the numbers aren’t really the story here. The real story is Bobbi Dhlomo and Ndumi Nhlapho. South Africa has completely fallen for them. And perhaps what’s most surprising is that this isn’t your typical fairytale romance. It’s complicated, morally messy, emotionally satisfying, frustrating and somehow still incredibly sweet. That’s exactly why viewers keep coming back every evening.

Let’s take a deep dive into this sweet yet complicated relationship.

Bobbi and Ndumi weren’t supposed to work

When we first met Ndumi (played by Hope Mbele), she had absolutely no interest in Bobbi Dhlomo (played by Sdumo Mtshali). Honestly, who could blame her? Bobbi has built quite the reputation. He’s charming, wealthy, handsome and knows it. He’s also known for moving from woman to woman while still being with Lethabo (played by Seipati Mahamu), the mother of his children and the woman who’s stood by him for sixteen years without ever truly becoming his wife. Ndumi wanted nothing to do with him or the powerful Dhlomo family. To her, Bobbi wasn’t a romantic possibility. He was exactly the kind of distraction she didn’t need.

But Bobbi isn’t someone who accepts rejection easily. The more Ndumi kept saying no, the more determined he became to prove everyone wrong, including himself.

Bobbi found the one woman who couldn’t be bought

What makes their relationship refreshing is that Bobbi couldn’t simply flash money and expect Ndumi to fall into his arms. She challenged him and questioned him. She kept her distance. Sure, buying her younger brother Mnini (played by Quinton Madlala) the laptop he desperately wanted softened her heart a little. But that wasn’t the moment she fell. It was everything that followed.

Bobbi remembered her birthday. He made her feel seen. He celebrated her in ways nobody else ever had. The now-viral “Happy Birthday Beyoncé” moment wasn’t just funny, it perfectly summed up why audiences melted. For someone like Ndumi, who’s spent her entire life carrying everyone else’s burdens, being looked after for once felt revolutionary. And that’s what viewers connected with.

Ndumi allowing herself to be loved

One of the smartest things The Four of Us has done is make Ndumi more than simply a love interest. She’s a woman constantly sacrificing for others and works hard as a hairstylist. She raises and protects her younger siblings. Ndumi worries about everyone’s future before thinking about her own. But when Bobbi arrives, for perhaps the first time in years, someone asks what she wants. When you’re so used to taking care of everyone, it feels good when someone finally takes care of you. That’s exactly why her walls came down much faster than many expected.

Perhaps the biggest surprise isn’t Ndumi. It’s Bobbi. Around everyone else, especially his family, Bobbi is always performing. He’s constantly trying to prove he’s worthy of leading the Dhlomo empire after years of living in his sister’s shadow. He’s loud, cocky and competitive. Always fighting for recognition. But when he’s around Ndumi he’s very quiet, gentle and vulnerable. Suddenly the notorious playboy isn’t just a player anymore.

The problem is…

This is where The Four of Us refuses to make things easy. Because while viewers are happily shipping Bobbi and Ndumi, there’s one person standing directly in the middle. Lethabo. She’s been with Bobbi for sixteen years and she’s mother of his children. She’s waited patiently for acceptance from the Dhlomo family and now she’s unknowingly about to face the biggest betrayal of her life. Which creates an uncomfortable question for viewers. Should we really be rooting for Bobbi and Ndumi? Or are we simply overlooking the pain that’s waiting around the corner because their chemistry is impossible to ignore?

Then theres the delicious hypocrisy! As if things weren’t already complicated enough, Ndumi has spent weeks trying to stop her younger brother Ntando from pursuing Balungile Dhlomo (played by Kealeboga Masango). She doesn’t want her family becoming entangled with the Dhlomos. She knows how powerful and messy that family can be. Yet there she is…secretly falling head over heels for Bobbi. The irony isn’t lost on viewers. It’s the kind of contradiction that feels wonderfully human rather than frustrating. Because sometimes the advice we give others is exactly the advice we struggle to follow ourselves.

Different worlds, shared pain

On paper, Bobbi and Ndumi make absolutely no sense. She comes from a world where every cent matters. He comes from unimaginable wealth. She spends her life taking care of everyone. Everyone else spends their lives taking care of him. She values responsibility. He’s known for recklessness. Yet beneath those differences lies something they quietly share, loss. Both know what it’s like to lose a parent. Both understand loneliness, even if it looks different. And perhaps that’s why they recognise something familiar in each other. Sometimes love isn’t about finding someone exactly like you. Sometimes it’s about finding someone who understands the parts of you that nobody else sees.

Every show eventually discovers the story audiences can’t stop talking about. For The Four of Us, it’s undoubtedly Bobbi and Ndumi. Their relationship isn’t perfect. It isn’t conventional. And it certainly isn’t innocent.

But it’s authentic enough to make millions tune in every night hoping they’ll get another stolen glance, another heartfelt conversation or another moment that makes them believe these two somehow belong together, even if they probably shouldn’t. And judging by the conversations happening online every evening, Bobbi and Ndumi’s story is only getting started.
