Netflix celebrates 10 years in South Africa with a major new slate of local series and films, while strengthening its partnerships with the country’s production industry and looking ahead to its second decade. The streaming giant marked 10 years in South Africa at a press showcase in Rosebank, Johannesburg, bringing together Netflix executives, filmmakers and some of the country’s biggest on-screen names for a look at the next wave of South African stories heading to audiences locally and around the world.

The milestone comes with some significant numbers behind it. Since launching in South Africa in 2016, Netflix says its local productions and partnerships have supported more than 8,000 jobs through collaborations with over 30 local production companies.

10 years of South African stories on Netflix

Blood and Water celebrates Netflix 10 Years

Netflix‘s South African journey has produced some of the country’s most recognisable streaming titles of the past decade. From Blood & Water and Young, Famous & African to Unseen, Silverton Siege, Fatal Seduction, How to Ruin Christmas, Beauty and the Bester, Marked, Kings of Joburg, Blood Legacy, The Polygamist and most recently Umthetho, the platform has steadily expanded its investment in local stories and talent.

According to Netflix, its South African productions have been filmed across 20 cities in eight provinces, showcasing different parts of the country while taking local stories to a global audience. More than 300 local titles have become available on Netflix over the past decade, with several South African productions going on to appear on the platform’s Global Top 10 lists. And the latest success story is impossible to ignore.

The Polygamist becomes a global Netflix hit

Johannesburg-filmed supernovela The Polygamist has become one of Netflix‘s biggest recent South African successes. The series generated more than 24 million views in its first weeks, reached the Netflix Top 10 in 62 countries and ranked number one in more than 21 countries, according to Netflix. The show’s success has also extended beyond television. Based on Zimbabwean author Sue Nyathi’s 2012 novel of the same name, The Polygamist sparked renewed interest in the original book, with Netflix reporting that book sales tripled following the series’ debut, more than a decade after the novel was first published. Netflix has subsequently highlighted The Polygamist as an example of how a distinctly South African story can travel far beyond its home market.

Netflix South Africa’s next chapter is already taking shape

The 10-year milestone isn’t simply a look back. Netflix‘s latest announcement points towards an increasingly broad South African slate, spanning returning dramas and comedies, films, reality television, dating formats, documentary entertainment and new partnerships with local production companies. Among the returning titles are Blood Legacy Season 2, Seriously Single Too and Another Disaster Holiday, while Tuiskoms Season 2, Marked Season 2 and Meet the Khumalos 2 are currently in different stages of production.

Blood Legacy Season 2 arrives on 25 September 2026, bringing the Ndlovu family back into another battle over power, business and survival. As secrets surrounding the origins of the family’s empire begin to surface, the fractured family must confront threats both outside and within its own ranks. The returning drama stars Xolile Tshabalala, Buyile Mdladla, Mike Ndlangamandla, Thembi Nyandeni, Amanda Seome, Dineo Rasedile, Anthony Oseyemi, Enhle Mbali Mlotshwa, Nandipa Khubone, Pallance Dladla and Thabiso Ramotshela, among others.

How to Ruin Diwali: Meet The Parents

The How to Ruin universe is also expanding with How to Ruin Diwali: Meet The Parents, launching 30 October 2026. The new comedy follows Mmabatho Nkomo, an overachieving perfectionist whose attempt to impress her fiancé’s traditional Indian family takes a disastrous turn when she accidentally exposes her future father-in-law’s secret affair. With Diwali just days away, Mmabatho has to navigate unfamiliar cultural territory while attempting to repair the family she has helped tear apart.

The film is a collaboration between Burnt Onion Productions and Urban Vision, with Jayan Moodley, known for The Kandasamys, involved as producer. The cast includes Rosemary Zimu-Mnguni, Kyle Clark, Jailoshini Naidoo, Koobeshen Naidoo, Sonia Mbele, Meshack Mavuso, Luthando ‘BU’ Mthembu, Denise Zimba and Ashish Gangapersad, among others.

Another Disaster Holiday

Christmas gets another dose of chaos with Another Disaster Holiday, arriving 11 December 2026. Directed by Rethabile Ramaphakela, the film follows Joseph Ngema as he prepares to become a father again at 50 and becomes determined to prove that he is still the best dad around. A supposed romantic babymoon in Sun City with his heavily pregnant partner Nandi quickly becomes something else when Joseph attempts to crash his children’s holiday with his ex-wife Dora — and finds himself competing with her younger new boyfriend. Kay Sibiya joins the returning cast as Dora’s new partner and Joseph’s latest competition.

Tuiskoms Season 2

Netflix is also bringing viewers back to Tuiskoms with a second season coming later in 2026. As Fleur and Werner prepare for their wedding, their plans take an unexpected turn, while a free-spirited woman with a complicated past returns to Wilderness after years away in the hope of reconnecting with the family she left behind. The romance stars Amalia Uys, Kim Syster, Jane de Wet, Clint Brink and Armand Aucamp.

Love Is Blind: South Africa

One of the biggest announcements from Netflix‘s 10-year showcase is the arrival of Love Is Blind: South Africa. The global reality franchise is coming to South Africa with Dineo and Zothile “Solo Ntsizwa” Langa as hosts. The format asks singles to form emotional connections and choose someone to marry without meeting face-to-face. From there, couples move in together, plan their weddings and discover whether their relationships can survive the realities of life outside the pods. The South African edition is produced by afrOkaans and is expected to launch later in 2026.

Seriously Single Too

Seriously Single Too brings back Dineo and Noni, although their friendship is facing a serious test. What begins as a Cape Town bachelorette getaway for the now-estranged friends quickly spirals into a series of disasters that threatens to end their friendship altogether. The buddy comedy is directed by Rethabile Ramaphakela and Katleho Ramaphakela and stars Fulu Modibedi, Tumi Morake, Buntu Petse, Keke Mphuthi, Yonda Thomas and Thabiso Rammusi.

Stars & Vows: Anele & Buzza

Netflix is also expanding its unscripted offering with Stars & Vows: Anele & Buzza. The wedding docu-soap follows television and radio personality Anele Mdoda and Bonelela “Buzza James” Mgudlwa as they navigate their relationship and the road towards saying “I do”. The series is created by Nomzamo Mbatha, Teddy Geldart, Vuyo Sowah and Pet Tasara, directed by Pascual Wakefield, and is scheduled to launch on Netflix later this year.

Marked Season 2

Marked Season 2 is also in production. The second season follows Babalwa as she becomes increasingly immersed in the criminal underworld, putting her family in even greater danger. The heist thriller is created by Akin Omotoso, Sydney Dire and Steven Pillemer and stars Lerato Mvelase, Sdumo Mtshali, Natasha Thahane, Sphamandla Dhludhlu and Bonko Khoza.

Meet the Khumalos 2

Netflix is also bringing back the family chaos with Meet the Khumalos 2. The sequel features two mothers, an unforgettable road trip and an engagement hanging by a thread. Directed by Jayan Moodley, the comedy stars Khanyi Mbau, Ayanda Borotho, Jesse Suntele and Khosi Ngema.

Netflix announces more local production partnerships

The next chapter of Netflix South Africa is also about who is making the stories. Netflix has announced further partnerships with local production companies, including The Bomb Shelter Film Productions, which is working on a new scripted series, as well as a multi-title partnership with Tshedza Pictures covering four scripted series.

Netflix also announced that BrightFire Productions is working on a new dating reality show. The expanded slate reflects the platform’s continued investment in South African creators and production companies across commissions, acquisitions and licensing, with more local stories being developed across a range of genres.

A decade of South African stories and counting

Netflix‘s 10-year milestone arrives at a particularly interesting moment for South African television and film. The platform entered the local market in 2016. A decade later, South African stories are not simply being made for South African audiences; they are travelling across borders, appearing in Global Top 10 lists and introducing local performers, writers, directors and production companies to audiences around the world.

The latest slate suggests that Netflix‘s next decade in South Africa will continue to lean into that model: local stories with the potential to travel globally. From Blood & Water and How to Ruin Christmas to Blood Legacy and The Polygamist, Netflix’s South African catalogue has grown significantly since 2016. Now, with Blood Legacy Season 2, Love Is Blind: South Africa, How to Ruin Diwali: Meet The Parents, Another Disaster Holiday, Stars & Vows: Anele & Buzza and several other projects on the way, the platform is betting that there are plenty more South African stories worth telling — and audiences around the world are ready to watch them.
