Simphiwe Ngema stars in Mzansi Magic's new mini-series

Mzansi Magic announces new mini-series slate

Mzansi Magic is bringing 10 new mini-series to DStv Channel 161 from the month of May, featuring leading local talent and produced by dynamic, youth-led production companies. The mini-series will air every Monday to Wednesday over a 10-week period, starting on 11 May 2026 and continuing into July.

The announcement of the exciting mini-series slate, produced by a new generation of talented young television creators, follows the recent announcement of the production of two new local reality shows, The Makhenes and Mgidi Moms, as well as an incoming second season of drama series Isithembu sika Msongelwa.

The first tranche of fresh mini-series are scheduled to air on Mzansi Magic from May through to July, with each title delivering three new episodes per week. They are produced by some various production houses and some which have made fan-favourite films and series before, including Ngomoya Films, Weldun Media, Pula Bakgaga, Behind the Best and Mthakati Entertainment.

“We are excited to be sharing stories made by exciting, talented teams who really have their finger on the pulse” says Shirley Adonisi – Channel Director for Local Entertainment Channels.

“The mini-series format is a really important part of how we support industry development and create opportunities for creatives. It gives producers who’ve built their experience in film the chance to step into series storytelling by developing a three-part mini-series. That shift isn’t just about format – it’s about growing new skills in writing, directing and production. Through this process, we’re helping creatives expand their craft while opening up more opportunities for directors, writers and production teams. At the end of the day, it’s about creating a pathway, one that helps talent move from film into drama, and ultimately supports more jobs and long-term growth in the industry,” adds Adonisi.

Adonisi also explains that the mini-series hook audiences with complete, high-quality stories that they can finish quickly with no long-series fatigue. Mixing deep characters with a cinematic feel, giving you the best of TV and film.
