Netflix has officially unveiled the first teaser trailer for Umthetho, and it’s already building anticipation for what promises to be one of South Africa’s biggest drama series of the year.
Premiering exclusively on Netflix on 14 August 2026, the eight-episode series is set to deliver an emotionally gripping story packed with crime, family conflict and impossible choices. Adapted from Netflix‘s acclaimed Brazilian drama Brotherhood, Umthetho brings the story home with a powerful South African setting, a stellar cast and the signature storytelling that has made local Netflix originals must-watch television.

What is Umthetho about?

At the heart of Umthetho is Mbali (played by Nqobile Nunu Khumalo), a brilliant young public prosecutor whose carefully built life is shattered when she discovers that her long-lost brother, Moses (played by Tony Kgoroge), is the leader of a ruthless prison syndicate.
Forced into a dangerous world she never imagined, Mbali finds herself caught between the law she has sworn to uphold and the family she cannot abandon. When the lives of those closest to her are threatened, she reluctantly joins forces with Moses to protect their younger brother, Sphelele (played by Given Stuurman). As the lines between justice and loyalty become increasingly blurred, every decision comes with devastating consequences. With betrayal lurking around every corner, Umthetho explores just how far someone will go when family and justice collide.

Umthetho is produced by Black Brain Pictures, the acclaimed production company behind several successful South African dramas. The executive producers are Mandla N, Mpumelelo Nhlapo and Annelie van Rooyen. The series is directed by Mandla N, Johnny Barbuzano and Jonathan “Jono” Hall, while Mandla N and Melissa Nayimuli serve as creative directors.
