Umthetho cast: Meet the stars of Netflix’s new crime drama

The gripping new Netflix series Umthetho brings together some of South Africa’s most celebrated actors, led by Nqobile Nunu Khumalo, Tony Kgoroge and Given Stuurman, alongside television household names Sindi Dlathu, Obed Baloyi and Molefi Monaisa. Umthetho cast also marks a return of veteran actor Ernest Msibi, who joins this crime drama helmed by Black Brain Pictures.

Adapted from the acclaimed Netflix Brazilian series Brotherhood, Umthetho follows public prosecutor Mbali Dlamini as she finds herself caught between her duty to uphold the law and her loyalty to the brother she believed had died years ago. Nqobile Nunu Khumalo as Mbali Dlamini

A skilled young public prosecutor whose life is turned upside down after discovering her brother is alive. Nqobile Nunu Khumalo leads the cast as Mbali Dlamini, adding another major role to her growing résumé. Netflix viewers will recognise her from Fatal Seduction S2, while South African audiences also know her for standout performances in Scandal! and Red Ink.

Tony Kgoroge as Moses

Mbali’s brother and the feared leader of the ruthless prison syndicate known as iGazlam’ – The Brotherhood. Tony Kgoroge takes on the role of Moses, the ruthless leader of the prison syndicate at the heart of Umthetho. One of South Africa’s most acclaimed actors, Kgoroge is known internationally for Invictus, Hotel Rwanda and Netflix‘s Savage Beauty S2, while local audiences will also recognise him from Imbewu – The Seed, Tjovitjo and Recipes for Love and Murder.

Given Stuurman as Sphelele

The youngest sibling whose safety forces Mbali and Moses into an uneasy alliance. Given Stuurman stars as Sphelele, the youngest sibling whose fate drives the emotional heart of Umthetho. The child star is best known for his roles in MTV Shuga, Scandal! and Black Tax, and has also appeared in Netflix’s JIVA!

Sindi Dlathu as Agnes Khoza

Sindi Dlathu stars Umthetho as Agnes Khoza, the prison’s Head of Centre. One of South Africa’s most celebrated actresses, Dlathu is best known for her acclaimed performances in The River, Muvhango, and Queendom. She currently leads etv‘s new daily drama The Four Of Us, also streaming on Netflix.

Molefi Monaisa as Detective Bennet Tau

Bennet Tau becomes deeply involved as the investigation intensifies. Molefi Monaisa portrays Detective Bennet Tau, a key figure investigating the dangerous prison syndicate at the centre of Umthetho. A respected stage and screen veteran, Monaisa is known for his roles in Skeem Saam, The River, Lockdown and The Throne, bringing decades of acting experience to the Netflix crime drama.

What is Umthetho about?

Umthetho, the isiZulu word for “The Law” centres on Mbali Dlamini, a brilliant public prosecutor whose world is shattered when she discovers that her brother Moses, presumed dead for 14 years, is actually alive and leading one of the country’s most dangerous prison syndicates. As violence escalates both inside and outside prison walls, Mbali is forced into an impossible position where every decision tests her commitment to justice, family and survival.

The series explores corruption, loyalty, betrayal and the price of protecting those you love, asking one central question: When family and justice collide, which side do you choose?

When does Umthetho premiere on Netflix?

Umthetho premieres exclusively on Netflix on 14 August 2026. The South African original is produced by Black Brain Pictures, with Mandla N, Johnny Barbuzano and Jonathan “Jono” Hall directing the series. It is adapted from Netflix‘s Brazilian hit Brotherhood.

With an all-star cast led by Nqobile Nunu Khumalo and Tony Kgoroge, Umthetho is shaping up to be one of South Africa’s biggest Netflix releases of 2026.
